Great place for dogs! Rangers don't mind if they are (shhhhhh) off the leash.
From there, I took the Blue to the Red trails and then did the Yellow Knoll Loop, and then the Red back down to the entrance. I only saw two other hikers on this leg, until I reached the waterfalls. It was a moderate hike for me, but I took my time, sat and read for a while at the top of the mountain, and got some nice pictures. Overall, this took about 3 hours.
Is genuinely a beautiful place once you reach the top of the mountain. While the mountain isn't particularly high, it is steep in some areas with exposed rock and roots. However, the views are amazing. You can see all of the northern high country to Mt. Jefferson, and I even saw Roan Mountain, which is on the NC/TN lines. The park wasn't very busy, and we enjoyed the overlook to ourselves for about 30 minutes before anyone else came up.
I went here on a Sunday afternoon, and took the Red then Orange trails to the lookout area. On this route, I only saw two other couples and had the top of the mountain to myself for a while.
It is a nice hike through woodlands. The climb to the peak is fairly easy. With all the choices in NC for mountain hikes, I don't think I will do this one again.
Nicely maintained trails and friendly folks working at the park. Hike wasn’t too long to the top of the mountain and the view was beautiful. It’s a steep climb but a short distance so it makes it very achievable.
