Good food that's a pleasurable difference from the usual chain restaurants. Great salad options and desert plates. Very friendly staff. Recommend for good FILLING food that's the next best thing to home cooking. Parking more than ample. Only thing keeping it from 5 stars is that it's a bit pricey.
It was after a busy black Friday morning full of heavy duty shopping... stopped in for a late lunch/early dinner....it was absolutely just as delicious as eating with your granny, it tastes as AWESOME as your grans recipes! Country steak & gravy over a bed of fluffed rice with a side of tomatoes and cucumbers and purple onions swimming in tangy vinegar, a warm biscuit and the very best tea...I kept closing my eyes hoping my beautiful granny would limp with that hard mill life shuffle, up behind me and kiss me on the cheek and ask if I needed more and if I was ready for our game of old maid and orange jello and pecans! I loved it so much. Sigh!
Ample parking, wide variety of comfort food. Also foods for vegetarians, weight watchers, and those who want a refreshing drink or come in starving! Plenty of seating. Some of the best chicken tenders in Hickory. Family oriented, with a special for children on Wednesday nights. You control the price by your selections, but with everything so good. ..it is easy to get carried away! Then they cheerfully provide a take home box if you want. Another shopping break!
J&S used to be my go to place when I wanted basic cafeteria food at an inexpensive price. Over the last few months, the quality has diminished and the value has decreased. Tonight, my friend and I each purchased a meat, 3 veggies, a beverage and dessert and the bill came to about 29.00 which I think is pricey for a cafeteria. The meats were barely warm and the vegetables were down right cold. They seem to have cut their staff significantly over the past 6 months and the whole dining room was being serviced by one waiter /busboy. He was friendly and working hard but could not keep up with the customers.
I was in the hickory location a few days as go to get a to go order to take to work. There were not many patrons there sitting and eating. There were no customers in the serving line. There were about 6 or 7 servers behind the serving line and several wait staffer in the dining room area. I went to the take out counter to place a order. I noticed that there was no one working the take out line. The counter was cluttered with papers and a tray full of dirty dishes. I stood there for 10 minutes and during this time no one came to me and asked if they could help me. The wait staff would consistently pass up the tray with dirty dishes and me. I decided that I would go through the serving line. When I read the back of the serving line I noticed the sign on the back of the serving line. I had already spent about 10 minutes standing at the take out counter and was getting ignored there so I thought I might get service there. As I was coming down the serving line one of the servers to me that he could not serve me because I had to go to the take out line to get my order. I informed that I had stood at the take out counter for 10 minutes and there was no one there to serve me. He said that he did not care that he did not have to serve me. At no time did he check to see If there was someone at the take out counter. Once I got to the end of the line someone hollered at me to bring my order and they would check me out. I do not appreciate someone hollering at me telling me that they were not going to serve me.
I have worked in the foods service industry for over 10 years and customers being talked too in that manner would kill your business. I do not have to tell you that your business like so many others that serve the public "word of mouth can hurt your business". If I am ever asked about your business I could not give you a good recommendation.
I do not know what, if anything you will do but I am really considering my options.
I was humiliated and talked to me in a bad manner. I may or may not come back to your resteranut. I usually come by when I need to get something to take to work. I cannot want forever to someone to take my order.
J&S has been a normal part of my routine for years but I have eaten there less frequently based on these factors. We decided tonight will be our final visit.
